Installation view, exhibited as part of Root & Branch Work, Studio 6, Temple Bar Gallery & Studios (2007).
Fairyfield resulted from an interview with Angela O’Gorman, Clonaslee, Co. Laois discussing her knowledge of local folklore. In this piece Angela tells a story about a field in which her relatives found themselves trapped one night believing the field to be bewitched by ‘the fairies’. Stories such as this still persist in rural Ireland. A subtext within the story points at historical attitudes towards gender in rural Ireland.
I was interested in visualizing the story in a way that conveyed a sense of disorientation or altered consciousness for the viewer.
